Interview – Keren Brown from The Brown Trading Co

Today we have an interview with the lovely
Keren Brown from The Brown Trading Company.
Welcome Keren. Who is behind The Brown Trading Company?
My brother Gavin and I are the business owners. I do all the creative, marketing, PR side of things and Gavin looks after all the finance and logistics etc. It’s a great balance.
How would you describe The Brown Trading Company?
We are a wholesale and retail lifestyle brand designing and manufacturing textiles and homewares.
What products do you carry?
Textiles, cushions, tablecloths, napkins through to ceramics and lacquer ware. The brand is growing and we are adding lots of new product this year.

Where are you situated?
Our warehouse is based in Brisbane and we supply high end homewares, gift and interior design stores across Australia. We also have an online store for the general public, this enables shoppers to view and purchase our entire collection.

Tell us a bit about your background.
I am actually a teacher by profession but I also have a background in PR and Marketing which has come in very handy.
Do you have a hand in the design of your products?
I do all the designing myself in our studio and warehouse in Brisbane.
Where are your products made?
We manufacture both in Australia and offshore. Some of our products are handcrafted right here in Brisbane and we are so proud of those. Others are sourced from India, China and Vietnam. However we like to build a relationship with our manufacturers and many of our products are made in rural or remote areas of each country which enables us to give back to that community.
What new things are on the horizon for The Brown Trading Company?
We are launching our Miss Lou Lou 100% silk numbered limited edition cushions. I collaborated with the incredibly talented Kerrie Hess who has worked for Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton etc – it’s been such a wonderful process.
We are also about to launch our 100% soy hand poured in Australia candles. We are also adding to our lacquer tray designs, these are hand crafted in Brisbane.

Describe yourself in three words.

Authentic, creative, driven.
Who or what inspires you?
Many things inspire me from fashion, music, travel, magazines, books, colour – inspiration is all around us. It’s amazing where and when it can strike.
Where do you see The Brown Trading Co in five years?
It would be wonderful to see our business grow organically and become an international brand.
Thanks ever so much Keren for you time and for sharing your wonderful company with us.  I love supporting fabulous Aussie companies that are not only creative but also considerate in the manufacture of their products.  (All these gorgeous pics are from The Brown Trading Company website.)

  1. I really like the Linen Piped/Lime cushion as it is really simple and can be used in a variety of different settings. i think it would go well with our dark charcoal couch.

  2. I love Poppy because it reminds me of spring time, warm grass and cute mod designs. It would look great with my 60′s retro lamp, but doesn’t really need to match anything, beautiful things just go together!

  3. It is always a great thing to support our Aussie local companies. What a great competition thanks Lisa!
I like the Quatrefoil Patriot Blue coushin because its very classic in navy blue but with a modern pattern which would make it fit right at home on my guest bedroom taking pride of place in the centre of the bed to impress my friends and family when they come to stay!

  4. Michelle, Jennifer, Sarah and Paul, thanks for your creative entries!! Jennifer I love your comment about beautiful things just going together -so true!! Michelle is going for the classic quatrefoil one after my own heart. :) I can’t decide which colour though. Sarah I like yours and Jennifers “poppy” choice. My Nan used to have a wallpaper very similar to this print, it certainly would add a pop to your space and a smile to your face. Paul linen with lime piping, would definitely go with pretty much anything and look great on your charcoal couch. Keep the entries coming everyone!

  5. Excellent interview Lisa.
    Fantastic entries thus far too.
I absolutely love the ‘Palms Blue’ cushion. It will go beautifully on my couch with the green, blue and burnt orange theme I have on there. I feel I need another type of cushion because at the moment I only have stripes and block colours. And as it’s palms, it will be a lasting reminder that ‘we work to live, not live to work’.

  6. I love the Quatrefoil Patriot Blue cushion because it’s bold but still very pretty. I think it would make my tiny lounge room a lot more stylish and it would mean I could put the cushions that are currently on my couch back on my bed where they belong!

  7. I would love to win the Leila Eggshell. It reminds me of all the old scraps of material my grandmother would keep in her sewing room. I can see it going in my bedroom as a lovely contrast to the other furnishings. Our whole house is still a work in progress so any new additions are very exciting.

  8. Great interview Lisa! I love the Quatrefoil Rose cushion as it is such a beautiful design & colour. I would love to give it my granddaughter for her bedroom. It would match the pinks & whites & stylish design that is there.
